Holy Trinity Church, Bothenhampton

Bothenhampton church1.jpg

There are two Churches, in Bothenhampton, the 14th Century Old Holy Trinity Church, now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and the new 19th Century, Holy Trinity Church, found on the corner of Crock lane & Hollow Way.

Holy Trinity Church was designed in 1887 by E. S. Prior with W. H. Lethaby, the chief inspirers of the 'Arts and Craft's Movement'.  The church was consecrated in 1890 by the Bishop of Salisbury, and is renowned for its massive stone arches which are unique to the area.  The altar is a triumph of the Movement, being designed by W. R. Lethaby, and was exhibited in the Arts and Craft Exhibition of 1889 and also in an Exhibition of Victorian and Edwardian art in 1952.

This new church replaced the 14th century church at the northern end of the village, but the old churchyard continues to be used for burials and the interment of ashes of our parishioners.

The church hosts many Events, in particular our very successful monthly coffee mornings on the 1st Saturday of the month, where folk from church and village come to browse the stalls or simply chat over tea or coffee and, of course, cake.

Our new servery is our latest completed project, which helps us to be better able to serve our increasingly renowned refreshments, in church.

In July we hold our annual 'Summer Fete' in the church grounds which draws in not just our villagers but people from around the district.

The church offers a variety of monthly services, with a service each Sunday morning at 11.00am.  We hold informal Songs of Praise evening services and we mark special holy days with special services.

Our usual pattern of service is:

  • 1st Sunday is a sung service of Holy Communion (CW)

  • 2nd Sunday is Mattns/Morning Prayer (BCP)

  • 3rd Sunday is a sung service of Holy Communion (CW), and a 6.00pm Evensong (BCP)

  • 4th Sunday is Holy Communion (BCP)

  • 5th Sunday is a sung service of Holy Communion (CW)

Our ten strong mixed adult choir is led by our Director of Music and sings a variety of church music including anthems at most services.

One of the highlights of our year is the 'Team Advent Service' held in the evening by candlelight.

The church is beginning to be used for concerts, exhibitions and lectures.
